Why it matters
Nature is a source of joy and restoration that everyone should be able to
share in. That’s why we’re committed to finding solutions for the
environmental crisis at hand. From conservation efforts that empower local
communities to transformative solutions that need to be scaled, we’re
investing in a future where restoring our planet is no longer a distant
dream.
How it’s unfolding
Through the Earthshot Prize, EESF helps to mobilize a decade of
environmental action to repair our planet. The Prize has catalyzed over
£90 million in follow-on funding and supported more than 60 environmental
pioneers worldwide. It spotlights the best examples of climate leadership
and problem-solving from around the world to show that the answers to our
environmental problems already exist, and then it goes on to help them
scale.
For 50 years, the Giant Ibis was considered extinct in Cambodia. Its
rediscovery in 2000 sparked a conservation model that puts local
communities at the center of forest protection.
Ibis Rice has recruited
over 2,700 farmers who now receive premium prices for wildlife-friendly
rice, helping protect over 500,000 hectares of critical habitat and the
last remaining population of the giant ibis. With a
new facility
increasing production by 600%, this model sets out to prove that
sustainability can be both community-driven and economically viable.
